1962 "U.N. Force (India) Congo" overprinted military stamps
The stamps shown are the 1962 "U.N. Force (India) Congo" overprinted military stamps issued by the Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department exclusively for use by the Indian Army Postal Service serving with the United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC). The overprint reads "U.N. FORCE (INDIA) CONGO" on contemporary Indian definitive Map of India stamps. The set consists of six denominations: 1 np, 2 np, 5 np, 8 np, 13 np, and 50 np. They were issued on 15 January 1962 and had a relatively small print run of about 5,000 sets, making them one of India's more interesting military overprint issues.
Condition assessment
From photographs:
- All six values are present.
- The overprints appear genuine in style and alignment.
- Perforations appear complete.
- Colours are fresh with no obvious fading.
- The reverse shows hinge marks, so these are Mint Hinged (MH) rather than Mint Never Hinged (MNH).
- No obvious gum disturbance beyond hinging is visible from the photo.
Overall condition appears to be Very Fine Mint Hinged (VF MH)
