This 1 Ngultrum banknote was issued by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan shortly after its establishment in 1983. The obverse features Bhutan's Royal Emblem with two facing Druk (Thunder Dragons) surrounding the national emblem, symbolizing the sovereignty and Buddhist heritage of Bhutan. The reverse depicts the historic Simtokha Dzong, one of Bhutan's oldest fortresses, built in 1629 and regarded as the first dzong of the kingdom. The note is printed on paper with a "Royal Monetary Authority" watermark and is one of the most attractive low-denomination notes issued by Bhutan.
