British India 1 Rupee, Bombay Mint, 1888.
The
1888 One Rupee of Queen
Victoria, struck at the Calcutta Mint, is a
distinguished silver coin of British India and a popular collectible among
numismatists. The obverse features the crowned portrait of Queen Victoria
facing left with the legend “VICTORIA QUEEN,” while the
reverse bears the denomination “ONE RUPEE INDIA 1888” within
an ornate floral wreath. This specimen is the recognized “Incused C in Bottom Flower”
variety, identified by an incused letter “C” appearing
within the lower flower of the wreath, a characteristic Calcutta Mint die
marker used to distinguish mint varieties. Struck in .917 fine silver, the coin
weighs approximately 11.66 grams, measures about 30.5 mm in diameter,
and has a reeded edge. Its combination of historical significance, Victorian
design, silver content, and collectible mint variety makes the 1888 Calcutta
Mint rupee a desirable addition to any British Indian coin collection.
