INDIA - OFFICIAL 1937-39 1R to 10R, SG O135/38, NHM. (4)
George VI India Official 1937–39 1 Rupee to 10 Rupees Set (SG O135–O138) is a distinguished group of high-value Official stamps issued during the reign of King George VI for exclusive use by government departments in British India. Produced by overprinting the corresponding definitive stamps with “SERVICE,” these issues were used on official correspondence, fiscal documents, and high-value administrative mail. The set comprises the 1 Rupee, 2 Rupees, 5 Rupees, and 10 Rupees denominations, each featuring the engraved portrait of George VI and printed in attractive colours characteristic of the period. As high-value Official stamps, their usage was far more restricted than ordinary postage issues, resulting in comparatively lower surviving numbers, particularly in premium mint condition. This complete set is preserved in Never Hinged Mint (NHM) condition, retaining full original gum without hinge marks, an important attribute for collectors. SG O135–O138 represents one of the key high-value Official sets of British India and is highly sought after by philatelists specializing in George VI issues, Official overprints, and classic Commonwealth postal history.
