BURMA - 1937 Stamps of India to 5r, set complete, overprinted, SG 1/15, fine and fresh mint. (15)
George VI Burma 1937 Overprinted Issue, Complete Set to 5 Rupees (SG 1–15), is the first definitive stamp series issued following the administrative separation of Burma from British India on 1 April 1937. To meet immediate postal requirements, existing British India stamps were overprinted “BURMA” and placed into circulation, creating a historically important transitional issue that marks the beginning of Burma’s independent postal identity under British administration. The complete set comprises fifteen stamps ranging from the lowest denominations to the high-value 5 Rupees issue, featuring the portrait of King George VI and a variety of colours and denominations suitable for all classes of mail. As the inaugural stamp issue of Burma, the series holds a special place in Southeast Asian and Commonwealth philately. This complete set is described as Fine and Fresh Mint, retaining original gum, bright colours, and attractive overall appearance. SG 1–15 is widely regarded as a cornerstone issue for collectors of Burma, British Commonwealth, and overprinted stamps, combining historical significance, visual appeal, and enduring demand among philatelists.
