Queen Victoria British India 1862 Madras Mint 1 Rupee
The 1862 One Rupee of Queen Victoria is a classic silver coin of British India issued shortly after the transfer of power from the East India Company to the British Crown. Struck at the Madras Mint, the coin features the young crowned bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse with the legend “VICTORIA QUEEN,” while the reverse bears the denomination “ONE RUPEE” within an ornate floral wreath, surrounded by the inscription “INDIA 1862.” Minted in .917 fine silver, the coin weighs approximately 11.66 grams and measures about 30.5 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. Although dated 1862, many such rupees were struck over several years using the same frozen date. Madras Mint issues are identified by their distinctive mint characteristics and are highly regarded by collectors of British Indian coinage for their historical significance and craftsmanship.
