Queen Victoria East India Company 1 Rupee Calcutta Mint 1840

The 1840 One Rupee of Queen Victoria is one of the earliest and most iconic silver issues of the East India Company. Struck at the Calcutta Mint, the coin features the youthful left-facing bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse with the legend “VICTORIA QUEEN,” while the reverse displays “ONE RUPEE” in English and Persian within a laurel wreath, surrounded by the inscription “EAST INDIA COMPANY 1840.” Designed by the renowned engraver William Wyon (W.W.), this coin was minted in .917 fine silver, weighs approximately 11.66 grams, and measures about 30.5–31 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The 1840-dated rupees marked the beginning of Victoria's long numismatic association with India and remained in production for several years with the frozen date “1840,” making them a cornerstone of British Indian coinage and a highly sought-after collectible among numismatists today. This is an XF coin.
