George VI, Nickel, 1/4 Rupee, 1946, Bombay Mint, Head Type II, Rev IV, Diamond mint mark, Milled edge. GK 1346. NGC Slabbed MS 62. Very Scarce.

George VI Nickel ¼ Rupee 1946, Bombay Mint (Head Type II, Rev IV, Diamond mint mark, milled edge) (GK 1346) is a British India circulation coin struck in nickel as part of the late colonial fractional rupee series used widely across the Indian subcontinent in the final years before independence. The obverse features the refined “Head Type II” portrait of King George VI with standard imperial inscriptions, while the reverse (Rev IV) carries the denomination “Quarter Rupee” along with the date and Bombay Mint attribution, identified by the diamond mint mark and struck with a milled edge for improved durability in circulation. This 1946 issue reflects the transitional phase in Indian coinage when non-silver alloys like nickel increasingly replaced silver in lower denominations due to wartime and post-war economic adjustments. The example graded NGC MS62 is an uncirculated specimen showing strong mint luster and only minor contact marks typical of mint handling, placing it in the lower Mint State range. Its designation as “Very Scarce” indicates limited availability in certified high-grade condition, particularly for the Bombay Mint diamond-marked variety within the final George VI fractional rupee issues.
